1 John 1:5-10
This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.
Isn’t a lightswitch a convenient invention? One flick and the darkness flees, or should I say the light invades the darkest corners of a room. But imagine with me a few minutes…Imagine you flick that light switch, but the darkness remains…We would think the light bulb was burned our, the electricity was out, or the switch was malfunctioning. Logical correct? However, imagine you flicked that light switch, and nothing happened, but you acted as if everything was normal. You go into your bedroom, blustering and bumping into your furniture, oblivious to the darkness. You portray to read your Bible while reclining on your bed, and then holler to tell a family member what it means, although the family member sees you are in darkness and can’t see the words…Ludicrous! People would think we were cray..cray…as the youth would say…
John’s key message is in this paragraph is that God is completely light and darkness does not exist in Him. He elaborates on this divine statement in its immediate application by using contrasting statements. The negative statements are:
We are liars and hypocrites if we walk in darkness, but say we are walking with God.
We lack the truth and lie to our self, when we say we haven’t sinned.
We call God a liar, and don’t have his in dwelling word, when we deny we have sinned.
Wow!!!! How often do we deny the trivial infraction of God’s divine direction for our own selfish satisfactions. Gluttony, gossip, malice, back biting, adultery, fornication, bitterness, hard heartedness…these we practice…To walk in such willing deceptive darkness further enslaves us in the choking darkness. We all become liars, hypocrites, deceivers, accusers, idiots, and rebels. Yet we convince ourself that our relationship with God is fine. We sing Jesus paid it all, but walk presumptuously in trespass. Oh, how we deceive ourself. We Christians are men most miserable in such a state of utter darkness.
John writes two statements filled with direction and hope. Christ’s redemptive cleansing blood is a shower of grace we bathe in when we walk in the light of God’s character and existence,…His Word. This shower of grace not only cleanses us from sin but unites us in fellowship, communion with one another. But we must walk, live, move, exist in his light…not my morality or labor, but capitulation to the one who has redeemed us. Second, God’s faithful character and action is steadfast responding to the sacrifice of His Son when we confess our failings and disobedience. He is faithful and acts in justice when the confession comes, since Christ did pay it all. Oh to stand beneath the cleansing fountain of his blood. To experience the sanguine sacrifice that washes away the filth of the world and my own flesh.
Will you walk in the light or stay in the darkness of deception? Confess and repent relying on the purification of Christ’s imputed robes of light.
